Monday: We listened to David Foster Wallace's Commencement Speech "This is Water" and discussed argument/claims in a claims chart (this is under links and resources tab). I introduced the advocacy research assignment. Be thinking about what you want to research and have some ideas and basic research by Thursday.
Tuesday: I collected your Why projects. We shared a few. We brainstormed ideas for your advocacy paper and watched this heartwarming video. Wednesday: Beginning research for for advocacy project. Assignment Description & Duedates Thursday: We looked at op-ed (editorial) mentor texts to use as models for your research assignment. We made a list of stylistic and structural choices that you may choose to use in your essay.
Friday: Continuing research, conferencing. Review of MLA citation and outlining.

Monday: I was really energized after my NCTE conference. So enegized in fact that somehow I managed to not have coffee all day (crazy, I know). We talked about the definitions of advocate and advocacy. I assigned The Why Project. Due the Tuesday after break.
Tuesday: SSR and time to work on the Why Project Wednesday-Friday: Turkey Break. Enjoy! Monday: We watched this video on Plato's Allegory of the Cave. We discussed the symbolism of the shadows, imprisonment and the overall story and made connections to other stories that use that archetype. Tuesday: 2 Hr Delay. Shortened 2nd, normal 6th. Sub in both classes (English teacher meetings). You worked on your short story or on tomorrow's homework. Read this article from NPR and fill out this claims chart. Wednesday: We watched "Stephen Colbert signs of the 2016 Presidential Election" and discussed argument and purpose. We also discussed yesterday's article (argument, bias, purpose) and made connections to Adiche's Single Story and Plato's Allegory. Thursday: Sub (Ms. Gearhart is in Atlanta for NCTE conference). You completed the IAB ELA Literary Text benchmark Friday: Sub (Still in Atlanta. I will probably be posting many pictures of books on twitter). Guidance speaker to talk about career planning. Monday: We looked at College Board released student responses for the 2009 Q3 Prompt (the prompt we analyzed in class on Thursday). We used these as models and discussed what is expected in an 8 essay, 5 essay and 2 essay. I also passed out the prompt for your argumentative essay (due next Monday). You must have prewriting (outline) and thesis statement ready for Thursday.
Tuesday: Election Day- NO SCHOOL Wednesday: Socratic Seminar on the "Rhetoric of Revolution Unit". Here are the questions. Thursday: Workshop on Argumentative Essay. This is your only day in class to work on this essay. Friday: Veteran's Day- NO SCHOOL |
