Monday: We briefly discussed the SOAPS of Patrick Henry's "Give Me Liberty" speech. Then we listed the strategies that Henry uses in his speech to achieve his purpose. We used this chart to brainstorm for the essay. At the end of the period, I passed out the Patrick Henry essay prompt. Complete the pre-writing questions and thesis statement for tomorrow. Also, you have a blog post due at Midnight Tuesday about Charles Frazier.
Tuesday: I talked about some strategies for writing a good rhetorical analysis essay. You can review this PowerPoint if you are struggling. We also reviewed how to write a strong intro and how to properly incorporate quotes into these essays. Make sure that you outline your essay before Thursday. Wednesday: Field trip to Martinsburg High to hear Charles Frazier. Make sure to complete the 2nd Charles Frazier Blog Post by Friday reacting to what you heard on the trip. 6th period had some time to work on the post and continue pre-writing. Thursday: Time to work on Patrick Henry Essay. Please make sure that your essay is saved on Office 365 and shared with me so that I can give you immediate feedback. Monday: I passed out composition notebooks for our new Bell Ringer process. We will be writing for the first 5-10 minutes of class every day. After we wrote and shared, we chatted a bit longer about Queen Elizabeth's Speech at Tilbury. We discussed the SOAPS and identified rhetorical devices in her speech. We then watched excerpts from three film versions of her speech and contrasted how the argument changes in each. If you didn't already do so, please note the following on the back of your Tilbury paper: 2-3 points about the argument of each of the film versions; 2-3 sentences contrasting the versions and discussing how the portrayal changes Queen Elizabeth's ethos and overall argument. The film versions are here: Tuesday: After our Notebook Time, we talked about one of the AP Essays. RHETORICAL ANALYSIS. We looked at the 2014 Rhetorical Analysis Prompt (found on page 9 of the hyperlinked PDF) on Abigail Adams and discussed how to dissect the prompt. We then dug into the language of the letter and addressed details of SOAPS. I also passed out Patrick Henry's "Give me Liberty" speech. We will be writing our first full rhetorical analysis essay on this speech. Wednesday; We briefly addressed approaches to the 2014 prompt and then looked at College Board released essays. We used these as a mentor texts and discussed qualities that earn an essay low, medium and high scores. I also passed out this permission slip for our field trip to Martinsburg next Wednesday. Please make sure I have your permission slip by Monday! Thursday: We finished looking at the 2014 essays and discussed rhetorical analysis expectations. Then, I introduced the "Give Me Liberty" Rhetorical Analysis Prompt and we worked on discussing the SOAPS and rhetorical choices of the speech. Make sure the speech is fully annotated for Monday. Friday: 2nd Period had SSR time. No class 6th Period because of the homecoming pep rally. Monday: We discussed "The Handsomest Drowned Man" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez in a literature circle format. Students took on the roles of reporter, connector, passage analyst and discussion leader. Many of you left early in 2nd Period because of the college fair. Then, I had you login to Office 365 so that you knew your password. We will be using this throughout the year, so make sure you don't forget! 6th Period, you also have a blog post about Marquez's story and the idea of a Single Story. Make sure this is completed by Friday Midnight. Wednesday: Stations! You rotated through 2 different memoir mentor texts. Click below to find the text if you missed class. At each station, you completed your observation sheet and discussed the style of the mentor text. I assigned your memoir writing assignment at the end of class. This will be due on Wednesday of next week.
Thursday: We finished rotating through the remaining 2 memoir mentor texts. We spent some time talking about your observations of the texts and talked in more detail about your memoir. Friday: SSR Share-Out . 2-3 of you shared your rhetorical findings. Then we spent some time gearing up for our first formal essay: Rhetorical Analysis. Today we practiced rhetorical situation and analysis with Queen Elizabeth's Speech at Tilbury. We discussed the SOAPS and identified rhetorical devices in her speech. Monday: No School, Labor Day! Tuesday: Frederick Douglass Socratic Seminar Day 1. Take a look at ahead of time to prepare! Wednesday: Frederick Douglass Socratic Seminar Day 2. After today's discussion, make sure to complete the blog post discussing Douglass and your reactions to this week's seminar. Thursday: We watched the TED Talk by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie entitled "The Danger of A Single Story". We discussed the rhetorical situation of the video and answered these questions. We also discussed Adichie's argument and talked about the importance of considering multiple perspectives. I assigned Gabriel Garcia Marquez's short story "The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World". Please annotate the story for tomorrow. Friday: We had our first AP SSR time. Hopefully you enjoyed having some time to read what YOU want to read in class. I shared my model for the SSR rhetorical share-outs. We also spent a bit of time discussing Marquez's short story and how it connected with Adichie's TED talk. |
