Monday: Beautiful Sentences! What makes them work? We explored beautiful sentences in our favorite books. Then, using our sentences as mentors, we wrote sentences about beauty, warmth, fear, innocence, hope, and despair. This lesson came from my teacher buddy at SMHS, Mrs. Hilliard. Here is a blog that she wrote about the activity if you missed any of the notes on Monday.
Tuesday: Exploring Punctuation. We used picture books, magazines, and favorite novels to discover the purposes of basic punctuation, and to explore the effects of the punctuation on writing. We used this chart to note our observations. Wednesday: We read, annotated, and discussed "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid. After annotating and discussing the SOAPS and argument of the piece, we worked on imitating the piece. Your imitation of this piece is due on Friday. Thursday: More playing with sentences. We worked on unscrambling sentences, discussing the effect of punctuation, and writing sentences based on mentor sentences. Friday: Imitation! This one is fun, and a lot easier than imitating "Girl". We read, annotated, and discussed "This is 45" by Emily Mendell. Then, you worked on imitating this piece for your own age. Your imitation is due on Monday.
