We are starting to get our AP Lang brains working this week. We are still working on basic analysis, but you are already starting to think analytically. You have learned this week that EVERYTHING IS AN ARGUMENT, and we will analyze just about anything in this class.
Monday: We briefly reviewed visual analysis. See last week's post for the powerpoint. We analyzed a few advertisements with a "what I see/what it means" chart. Then, we transferred those skills to analyzing the rhetoric of Fall Out Boy's "Save Rock and Roll" . You came up with such interesting insight! I also assigned the cultural artifact analysis discussion post. Please make sure to post your analysis by Friday at midnight. You have until Sunday at midnight to reply to 2 of your peer's posts. Please make sure to post in the correct period!! Tuesday: Stations! We focused on creating norms for online discussion and for how to improve large group (Socratic Seminar) discussions. Also, I introduced my expectations for SSR in AP Lang. Make sure to have a book by Friday! Wednesday: We began discussing one of your summer reading texts, The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. We discussed issues of dehumanization and examined some passages from the text. Additionally, we worked on generating discussion questions for our first Socratic seminar. Thursday: Skype in with Jay Heinrichs, author of Thank You for Arguing! Don't forget to complete your TYFA blog post reflecting on our conversation with Mr. Heinrichs. Friday: STAR testing and SSR. You also have time to finish any of your blog posts that are due this week. Both the cultural artifact post and your TYFA reflection post are due by midnight Friday. Make sure to comment on the posts of at least 2 of your peers by Sunday at midnight. Great job this week! Our first Socratic Seminar will be next Tuesday and Wednesday. We will be discussing Frederick Douglass. Check back here for questions to think ahead!

We are officially putting on our AP language hats and digging into basic rhetoric.
In class today, we will be talking about the very bare bones of rhetoric. Ethos, Pathos, Logos. Hopefully, you are already fairly familiar with those basics after Thank You for Arguing and your 10 Honors class. We also will be getting into basic visual analysis. For those of you who need a refresher, here is a PowerPoint to review. Also, in case you missed anything, here is the PowerPoint from Friday. Happy Analyzing! |
