Jack is now obsessed with the pig and killing which I also believe will lead to more violent things later in the book. Jack likes the feeling of being in power over something weak like the pig.

Jack has definitely changed a lot. Killing that pig turned him into a vicious child. Do you think he is adapting to survive by becomeing more aggressive?

"Jack! Jack!" "The rules!" shouted Ralph. "You're breaking the rules!" "Who cares?" Ralph summoned his wits. "Because the rules are the only thing we've got!" -Ralph page 91

The rules are more than just ways of keeping order. I think that rules for them is in a way comforting, because back home they had rules and expectations to keep them in order and safe. Without rules, they lose the only thing they have of home. I feel like since they're in a new environment the old ways of thinking and acting are bound to be...changed into more bestial ways.

I like how you pointed out that Ralph is doing the right thing by pointing out Jack. I agree with you on about the circumstances to come if they keep breaking the rules. However we won't know until later in the story.

I think this was a way for them to escape their fear and anger of being on the island. It just happened that they took it out on their friend.

I agree with what both of you said, I believe that this violent behavior. Despite how small and playful it may be now, will escalate and cause the boys to almost revert to a savage type of people and almost lose their humanity in the process.

Do you really think that children that age would so quickly go savage? It feels like I'm watching Zootopia again - there surely has to be SOME sort of psychological reasoning behind this, right?

I think this goes back to our Good vs. Evil discussion. I think it is easier for younger people to revert back to savagery because they haven't been taught or experienced enough consequences for their actions.

Yes, it seems Ralph has begun to give up on the group. In the next chapters we will be able to see what kind of leader Ralph is. He might show greatness or he can begin to struggle and lead to disappointment. All great leaders should be able to handle adversity and change but we will soon see what Ralph is made of.

I agree with you 100%. Ralph has had a huge character Change since the beginning of the book. I think he feels like he's the only one that truly wants to survive on the island.

I do agree that most of them have given up hope and that the children are taking advantage of Ralph. This will cause them to tear thenselves apart.

I really like how you said they all show their true selves. I agree with Ralph's role as chief being gone. I still think that everyone knows he is in charge, but they don't respect that. If Ralph doesn't have the conch, I doubt they'd actually listen to him.

Maybe it's better for the boys to prepare to spend a long long time on this island...their chances of being rescued are slim and with the subtle battle for power happening between Ralph and Jack this could cause another missed chance at rescue

True, because i feel like there not going to get rescued at the rate their going. But, I predict it's not survial that will kill them but they will kill each other.

I believe Piggy is smarter than everyone gives him credit for. He probably sense Jacks weird obsessive behavior with killing, and can tell that everyone is afraid of something. He is a comforter to the best of his abitlity with the kids on the island.

I like how you pointed out how Piggy has good leadership qualities. The other boys never want to listen to him, but he actually is pretty helpful. And I think it's important that they start to listen to him because if they don't, they may end up regretting it later in the book. I also like how you said Piggy was good at comforting the younger kids. He can already control them better than Ralph can, so this makes me wonder how much more Piggy can do that Ralph can't.

yes but Ralph has the body of a true born leader, the qualities in his body kind of represents his leadership. Because he looks stronger and bigger than everyone, he controls all the older kids, piggy can't do that.

Thats a pretty interesting perspective. Maybe the boys are developing their own mythology or religion almost which is one of the characteristics of a civilization.

Do you think he'll try to inflict his power over others like he does the pig, possibly killing the kids that try to resist him?

"We need an assembly. Not for fun. Not for laughing and falling off the log"-the group of littluns on the twister giggled and looked at each other-"not for making jokes, or for"-he lifted the conch in an effort to find the compelling word-"for cleverness. True. Ralph does want to get things done, however no one understands their current position. The littluns will proboly not notice what is about to happen before it is too late.
