On page 7 the narrator describes Piggy as short, very fat, and wearing thick spectacles, this is seen through the quote "He was shorter than the fair boy and very fat. He came forward, searching out safe lodge men's for his feet, and then he looked up through thick spectacles." When a situation is presented that requires immediate action Piggy reacts hesitantly. Whenever he finds an appropriate response he rarely acts upon it and rather requests others to do so as he is afraid of failure. However he does rarely act upon his ideas, this is seen on page 45 when he says "How can you expect to be rescued if you don't put first things first and act proper." Throughout the story it is shown that the other boys do not like Piggy and treat him as though he is an outsider and doesn't belong, this is seen on page 71 "'You would, would you? Fatty!' Ralph made a step forward and Jack smacked Piggy's head." This shows how other characters take advantage of Piggy's passive nature.

In the beginning, Jack is described as tall with fair red hair and pale skin. He comes in leading the boys in a uniformed and resourceful way. Ralph and Piggy had to put Jack in his place a few times because he became violent and aggressive. For example, Jack says things like "You would, would you? Fatty!" At the beginning, everyone was obeidient to Jack out of fear, but because he has become more aggressive, they haven't been respecting him as much. He progressively gets more savage throughout the book. He is becoming obsessed with finding meat and killing it.

Simon goes from being super quiet, but friendly, to using the conch at meetings and speaking his ideas, albeit quietly. "Again the pressure of the assembly took his voice away. He sought for help and sympathy and chose Piggy. He turned half toward him, clutching the conch to his brown chest." -pg. 128 after Jack leaves
