"'It's not necessary to tell all you know. It's not ladylike -in the second place, folks don't like to have someone around knowin' more than they do. It aggravates 'em. You're not gonna change any of them by talkin' right, they've got to want to learn themselves, and when they don't want to learn there's nothing you can do but keep your mouth shut or talk their language.'" As seen two pages later, on page 142, Dill explains how he is not actually abused by his father. Dill is known for, throughout the book, for being an exaggerator, as seen again in this passage. However, he does say that he feels that his is not loved or given enough attention.

The comment above was supposed to be for Charli Sweem's quote.

The word "bound" shows he couldn't move or leave from the chains, and "new" before father leaves a sad connotation because Dill doesn't have permanent parents.

I totally agree with that. Scout is somewhat like that in a way too, though. They've always been very prideful.

I agree ! I mean, here we see snow as just a nuisance that happens every winter. It's just something that's inevitable , but there, it's more of a miracle and it's hard to think that snow is that rare in some places.

This shows just how strong of a bond that Scout has for her father. In a way this quote shows that Scout and Jem are oblivious to many aspects of life that are common to us.

The quote shows that Atticus, Jem and Scout all have a strong bond. Scout didn't know what was happening so she wanted Atticus to help, with that it shows that she can go to him when things are going bad. Even though it was just snow, they thought it was something different and the world was ending, but Atticus reassured them easily.

Atticus using the word "simply" emphasizes how he views the whole ordeal. He believes that defending an African America is right, despite what the town believes. I believe he also expresses it in such a simple way to make Scout understand that nothing is out of the ordinary and is trying to make her see it the way he sees it; as something that shouldn't be given so much attention "simply" because its what's right.

I like how nonchalant Atticus is about all of this. He's very okay with defending and being around African Americans. It's sort of like our first glimpse to a future when racism and discrimination are not extinct, but they're continually getting less and less frequent

I agree with you on this quote. In order to make someone else happy and contribute to their lives, they have to learn how to be happy on their own and love theirselves. I believe he also says this because in order to be a good parent and guide his children in the right direction, he needs to be at peace with himself. In order to give out good energy, one's inner peace must be untouchable.

I agree with what your saying. Atticus needs to learn to be happy with himself before he can be happy with other people. Its just like when people say you need to learn to love yourself before you can love someone else. You will not be happy with anyone until you are happy with yourself first.

I totally agree with you. To make someone else happy and be able to love them. You have to be able to make yourself happy and be able to love yourself. I also think that Atticus is trying to set a good example for scout and Jem.

Even though, during this time the people around Atticus are negative, he is trying to stand up for his beliefs. This quote shows his optimism and that when he fully understands his views he'll be able to confront others opinions.

I think the details of there fathers lives came more clear during this time. By hearing the stories and tales about Atticus they developed a vague glimpse into the younger years of their father. Most of the people in town know or have heard of his skills yet so late in there lives they are hearing about it. It makes me think he could have hid it from them.

You should too notice, in chapter 10 how Scout is maybe a bit irritated about her father choosing to live in a "old person" neighborhood. That's possibly why Scout acted strange towards her family during this chapter.

I completely agree with your thoughts on this. The fairness in life at this time wasn't always given to everyone equally which is why I think he defended the man. He has those morals and for the best he was teaching them to his children. You can completely see why he never wanted prejudice to be apart of his children's lives.

I think a mockingbird is a symbol of a peaceful human being. It is a sin to kill another man or woman. It has always been a sin. A mockingbird brings peace to us by singing harmless hymns. To kill a mockingbird would be like killing a peaceful human.

"After my bout with Cecil Jacobs when I committed myself to a policy of cowardice, word got around that Scout Finch wouldn't fight any more, her daddy wouldn't let her. This was not entirely correct: I wouldn't fight publicly for Atticus, but the family was private ground. I would fight anyone from a third cousin tooth and nail. Francis Hancock, for example, knew that." (10.6)

As we see throughout the story, Scout acts in ways as though she wants to be different but is also comfortable the way she is. So I agree with you that maybe she views herself as though she's a little bit older, but for all the wrong reasons.

I totally agree with what you say. Uncle Jack says that she is more mature for her age and that she is kind of aware of what is happening around her. She matured in her fighting. She doesn't fight when someone calls Atticus a name. But she insists that she's doing what she's suppose to be doing.

Scout is only a little kid still, for her age she's really mature. I agree that she should live her childhood and she doesn't understand the meaning of some words, but Atticus has read to her and she listens into conversations. He has kind of played a role in that since he is a lawyer.
