The quote that I chose is " I should be chief" Jack said. I think this speaks a lot about Jacks personality and the way he talks to the other boys. He wants to be in charge, he wants to stand out and be different on a good way to show that he is more elligable to be leader.

I agree. Jack is very arrogant and he believes he's superior to all the others. Those are two characteristics that would make him a bad leader

I do agree with you on that. Jack is a very standoffish character in the story. He is a very overwhelming and confident character and wants to be in control of as much as possible. That could be a huge factor in the future of the story.

I also agree with you all on this. Jack wants to be superior to others and believes that he should be in charge. I believe that this quote shows his arrogance,

I believe that Jack sounded very power hungry and wants to be able to boss everyone around. If he did have power I believe the group would have been in rough shape.

Although he exerts a form of arrogance, it shows character description. Jack is an arrogant, dominate, person who believes he is above anyone else.

"'We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything.'" Jack - page 51

I agree with you, but they say they aren't savages but English I think they are referring to how they shouldn't let their situation turn them into something they aren't.

I also agree with the both of you. It seems that the boys are finally starting to see eye to eye. They recognize that simply because they are not home does not mean they shouldn't behave and act civilized.

Although Jack says "We're not savages" i don't think he truly means it. I think Jack takes pride in being a savage or savage-like. He likes being violence and assuring his dominance over all the boys on the island.

I think he wants to use patriotism to encourage and uplift the boys to follow the rules.

Ralph definitely seems like one who likes things to be orderly. At first, I'm sure things were not ideal as far as duties go, so I agree with your views on this.

"Shut up," said Ralph absently. He lifted the conch. "Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things." -Ralph

I agree with what you're saying about Jack being arrogant and how he shouldn't be leader just because he is lead chorister.

I agree with you. Jack wants to be the leader so bad that he is bringing up irrelevant things. He won't be a better leader than Ralph just because he can sing better than him. But at the same time I am not really convinced Ralph should be the leader either just because he happened to be the one to blow the shell.

I agree that Jack try's to show he is superior in the most ineffective ways and it is quite weird honestly.

I think Jack thinks he knows how to lead because he was the lead boy in the choir. He thinks it compares the situation they're in now.

"Better Piggy than Fatty," he said at last, with the directness of genuine leadership, "and anyway, I'm sorry if you feel like that. Now go back, Piggy, and take names. That's your job. So long." (Ralph pg.25)

This quote shows that Ralph isn't a very compassionate and respectful leader, which is key. He is making fun of Piggy's weight and gives him a job worth no respect.

The quote makes me feel like Ralph doesn't care. He makes it seem like that he doesn't want to respect others and just get off this island.

I agree with your insight on this quote. Ralph definitely asserts himself as leader, and the phrase, "with the directness of genuine leadership" shows this trait of his. Him saying this also supports Piggy's intelligence that we see throughout the book.

Ralph had stopped smiling and was pointing into the lagoon. Something creamy lay among the ferny weeds.

I agree . I also feel as if the finding of the conch is the beginning of Ralph's role of chief. He feels as if he has something that no one else does, therefore that sets him apart.

I agree with the conch being introduced and it is foreshadowing. Foreshadowing that the conch is something that everyone will want to be in power of.

Piggy already has low self esteem, and this quote supports the fact on why he should. People already call him piggy because of his name, he just wants to feel important and worth something.

I agree they're not using Piggy's intelligence for the good of the group. Instead they're just acting like he is no help and they would be better without them.

I think they don't give him the respect he truly deserves. He is a very smart person and has the basic knowledge they need to survive there and don't realize that yet. Though they should considering they've utilized all the ideas he has thought of.

I agree. If you were stranded on an island you should be considerate to everyone's opinion and feeling if you want to survive as a group. Their opinion could save your life.

"Inside the floating cloak he was tall, thin, and bony; and his hair was red beneath the black cap. His face was crumpled and freckled, and ugly without silliness. Out of this face stared two blue eyes, frustrated now, and turning, or ready to turn, to anger."
